Read Across America

Friends of the Library will meet Thursday, March 2nd (Also Read Across America Day!) at 5 pm.  It is time to get ready for the Bellringer Run! Our Race Director, Nicki Lazorik, is ready to kickstart planning for our Annual 4th of July Event.  This library fundraising race would not take place without our dedicated volunteers.  Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Come join our Friends and support the library through this event first run in 1984 by a group of dedicated Friends!  Come and join us at our meeting on Thursday if you are interested in helping.  Or contact us at the Library if you’d like to volunteer but are unable to attend meetings.  We have a volunteer listed started.  Thank you to our Race Founders and the many volunteers over the years who continue in making this a successful event.

Join one of our Book Clubs.  One meets the 2nd Monday at 6 pm (3/13/23) and the other the 3rd Wednesday at 9 am (3/15/2023).  In celebration of Women’s History month, we’ll be reading, “The Only Woman In the Room” by Marie Benedict and “The Women’s March” by Jennifer Chiaverini.  The first based on movie star, Hedy Lamarr and her role in WWII and the second, on the women’s suffrage march on 3/3/1913 down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C.  Both are historical fiction which I hope inspires additional reading of non-fiction offerings. LML owns the following non-fiction editions: “Hedy’s folly:  The Life and Breakthrough Inventions of Hedy Lamarr, The Most Beautiful Woman In the World” by Richard Rhodes, “The Book of Gutsy Women” by Hillary Rodham Clinton, “Alice Paul, Claiming Power” by Jill Diane Zahniser, and “The Women’s Hour, The Great Fight to Win the Vote” by Elaine Weiss.

Our next paint night will be Friday, March 17th at 6 pm.  Call or stop by the library to register.  We’ll be painting, “Spring Lamb” with The Art Sherpa.

Stop by to see you Mellen Student Art Displays and pick up a Take & Make craft and a book to share with your favorite young person.  Find out how you can help that child earn reading patches.
