Little Free Library at Gilman Park 01/19/2022
I’m not sure if you’ve had the chance to stop by the Little Free Library in Gilman Park, but please do if you get the chance. Take a Book. Share a Book. Is their motto. Last week I mentioned the name, Lutie Stearns. The library has a book about this wonderful person who is known as the “Johnny Appleseed” of Books. She helped to found the Wisconsin Free Library Commission and ran its department of Traveling Libraries. Between 1895 and 1914 she established over 1,400 portable libraries all over the state of Wisconsin, especially to communities where books were scarce. She also helped libraries write grants to build libraries around the state. I’ll share more next week about Mellen‘s ties to the traveling library network.
The Library Board will meet Tuesday, January 25 at 5:30 pm.
