August 28 – Back to School Books
Happy New School Year! The library has set out a variety of “Back-to-School” books. Different choices from “I Am Too Absolutely Small for School” by Lauren Child to “The Kalahari Typing School for Men” by Alexander McCall Smith; “Reading Magic” by Mem Fox to “Montessori Learning in the 21st Century” by M. Shannon Helfrich, and graphic novel choices, “Awkward” by Svetlana Chmakova and “Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians” by Jarrett J. Krosoczka. Stop by and see if any interest you.
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. If you don’t have a library card, stop by to get one. You’ll need proof of identification with your current address. You may then enter a special drawing for New Card Holders. If you already have a card, each time visit the library and present your card for check-out, you may enter a drawing. Stop by and see what your library card can do for you.
The Friends of the Library’s Quilt for their Fall Raffle is now on display at the Library. The quilt, “Stacks” was made by Judy Gibson and donated to the Mellen Friends by Elizabeth Webster. Other donations have already been brought in for the raffle which will be held on Saturday, September 28th, 9 AM-Noon. The drawing for the quilt and other prizes will begin at Noon. In addition to the “Stacks” quilt, we have a child-sized quilt with a fleece backing donated anonymously, plush whitetail deer blanket, blue chenille crocheted blanket, and plush blue snowflake blanket. All three donated by Sally Sarnstrom. Tickets are $1 each.
Library School Storytime is a program offered at the library for 3-year-olds to attend with an adult caregiver. Older and/or younger children are welcome to attend, but the story and activities are planned for 3s. If you’re interested in Library School Storytime, contact the library (715-274-8331). If there is enough interest, it will begin in October.
The Friends of the Library will meet next Thursday, September 5th at 5 PM.
At 7 PM Thursday, September 5th join us in making book art. We’ll share directions in creating a birdhouse or fairy house or? Depending upon your imagination and extra touches it could be anything. Materials for the project will be provided. This will be the first of our Conversation & Crafts meetings following our summer break. C&C will continue to meet on Thursday evenings at 7 PM. Stay tuned for future craft & conversation gathering subjects.

- Monday NIght’s, “What Kind of a Book Club Is This?!?! will meet on September 9th at 6 PM to be discuss, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Safron Foer.
- Wednesday Afternoon’s Book Club will meet on the 18th at Noon to discuss, “Little Faith” by Nickolas Butler.
- Friday, the 20th the Library will host another acrylic painting opportunity. This month it will follow Jane Font’s YouTube directions of a shelf of “Old Books”. This is a longer video so we’ll begin at 6 PM and see how for we get. We may need to agree on another day and time to wrap this painting up.
