The Wait is Over

David Wroblewski’s new book, “Familiaris” is now available.  Our library has a copy.  His first book, “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle” was published in 2008 and is set right here in the Mellen area.  Author Wroblewski spent time writing in our Historical City Hall building & museum.  His book was an “Oprah Book Club” selection, and we were visited by a crew from her television show at the time.  David Wroblewski gave a book talk and signing at the Town of Morse hall, where many of our book club members were there to greet him.  In fact, it was a packed house as locals, other area book club members, and book lovers filled the room.  We were able to have a special stamp made featuring our beautiful City Hall building and a cancelation stamp from our Mellen Post Office with the help of the Postmaster at the time, Sara Schultz.  Local artist, Karen Michel painted her rendition of two dogs from the book and a compliment to the book’s cover art.  The paintings are still hanging in the library.  Wroblewski’s new book is a prequel to “The Story of Edar Sawtelle” and is an Oprah Book Club selection for 2024.  We have copies of David’s first book, if you haven’t read it yet or would like to refresh your memory.  Stop by the library to check one out.
We’ve added a snake to our outdoor display.  His name is Roscoe.  You are invited to add a painted rock to “grow” Roscoe.  Tuesday mornings 10:30-noon, through August you may paint a rock to add to Roscoe here at the library.  Or you may add one you’ve painted at home. Let’s see how long Roscoe gets before school starts.
Our Summer Reading Challenge ends today, July 31st.  We’ll announce the winners in next week’s paper.
The Friends of the Library will meet on Thursday, August 1st at 5pm at the Library.
Our first Book Club was held in 2004.  This year marks 20 years of gathering to discuss books, sharing our experiences, and listening to one another.  We’ve read books that we enjoyed and some we didn’t.  We’ve read things that stretched our views and some that validated our beliefs.  We’ve been respectful of our differences and celebrated things we have in common, like our love of reading and the library.
The library hosts two book clubs and we welcome new members.  One meets the 2nd Monday night of the month at 6pm and the other will be moving back to the 3rd Wednesday morning of the month at 9am. The library borrows books through the Northern Water Library Network interlibrary loan system, so there is no need to buy books.  If you are interested, contact the library at 715-274-8331 or stop in and tell us. Reading lists are being prepared for our 2024-25 season and will soon be available.  A list will also be on our library website’s (https://www.legionmemoriallibrary.org/) Book Club Page. From the website page, you can click on the book cover, and it will bring you to the catalog where you can read the summary of each title.
Hope to see you soon at the library!
